RP-AA-300 — Radiological Survey Program
Purpose
Provides requirements and guidance for performing radiological surveys, determining dose rates, and calculating stay times for work in radiation areas including containment entries.
Key Actions / Information
JPM — 2022 RO-A4
Stay time calculation for containment entry: determine dose rate from radiological survey map for the work area, then calculate stay time = (dose limit / dose rate) x 60 min/hr. Must separately calculate gamma and neutron stay times and compare against heat stress limits. The most limiting factor (lowest time) determines the maximum allowable entry time. At 22 CFCU area: gamma = 5 mrem/hr (24 min stay time), neutron = 40 mrem/hr (12 min stay time — most limiting), heat stress = 15 min.
JPM — 2022 SRO-A4
Containment entry dose calculation from survey map: gamma = 5 mrem/hr, neutron = 40 mrem/hr. For 12-minute entry: gamma dose = (12/60) x 5 = 1 mrem, neutron dose = (12/60) x 40 = 8 mrem. Total dose per operator = 9 mrem. Must add to year-to-date TEDE for Administrative Dose Control Limit (2000 mrem) comparison.
JPM — 2019 RO-A3
Dose calculation for Pipe Alley entry using Survey Map #1108410: highest On Contact dose rate = 205 mrem/hr, highest General Area dose rate = 10 mrem/hr. Per initiating cue, use On Contact rate as GA rate. Dose = 205 mrem/hr x (1/60) hr = 3.42 mrem (3.5 mrem rounded up is acceptable). Attachment 2 provides definitions of survey map symbols and abbreviations.
JPM — 2019 SRO-A4
SRO version of Pipe Alley entry (Survey Map #1108410): same survey data but dose calculation uses 2 minutes total (1 minute per operator x 2 operators) at the On Contact rate of 205 mrem/hr. Total personnel dose = [205 mrem/hr x (1/60)] x 2 min = 6.8 mrem (6-7 mrem acceptable). Must also determine HRA authorization per RP-AA-463 (SRPT authorizes key release).
