RP-AA-4000 — Personnel Conduct in Radiologically Controlled Areas

Purpose

Administrative procedure governing personnel conduct and dosimetry requirements in Radiologically Controlled Areas (RCAs), including requirements for self-reading dosimeter monitoring frequency and alarm response actions.

Key Actions / Information

Self-Reading Dosimeter Monitoring Frequency

Area TypeMonitoring Frequency
Radiation AreaEvery 30 minutes
HIGH Radiation AreaEvery 15 minutes

Dosimeter Alarm Response

Exam — 2019 Q44
Per RP-AA-4000, self-reading dosimeters should be read approximately every 15 minutes while working in a HIGH Radiation Area (30 minutes is for a Radiation Area — different from a HIGH Radiation Area). If an unexpected self-reading dosimeter comes into alarm, the worker is REQUIRED to exit the area immediately and notify RP personnel. Trap: the worker must EXIT the area, not just go to a low dose area within the HRA. Exiting is the required action before RP verification of the alarm.
Exam — 2018 Q44
Confirms same facts tested in 2019 Q44: self-reading dosimeter monitoring frequency in a HIGH Radiation Area = every 15 minutes (not 30 minutes — that is for a standard Radiation Area). On unexpected dosimeter alarm, NEO must exit the HRA immediately and notify RP — NOT just go to a low dose area within the HRA.
